I’ve been skiing for 56 years and though I’ve never skied out West, I have skied from as far North as Jay, to as far South as heli-skiing the Andes in Portillo Chile.
In my East Coast list of must mountains to be skied, I include Jay Peak, Mad River Glen, and Plattekill.
Sure there are other great skiing mountains in the Northeast, and I have skied many of them, but put me in the woods at Platty on one of those elusive deep POW days and you’re going to get in runs that most people only dream of.
Last year we hit Platty just right. Because of its location in the Catskills, it’s a mini snow globe, and they can get Lake Effect accumulation. Mix that in with a big dump and POW, it’s Northeast woods skiing at its best. Run after run, you get a fresh line, all day long.
And because Platty is off the beaten path, you’re never going to see the crowds that most ski areas strain under.
Great, cozy lodge, always a warm fire, great people, beers, and waffles from the Platty Shack!
A ski experience not to be missed. True old school vibe at its best.
Hats off to the Platty team! Applause to the Snow Farmers!
Great mountain and love that it’s family-owned. Barely any lines on a Saturday and the people visiting are super chill. The prices are reasonable, bathrooms are clean, and snowmaking is pretty good!
We had our wedding here and it was perfect! The view was amazing, everyone was so nice! Thank you for letting us have our wedding here! It was so much fun! Can't wait to ski this season there too!
Wonderful ski mountain! We only skied on the beginner greens but they were challenging, fun and longer than most mountains. In the evening, the lodge had live music, great food and local beer.
Quaint hidden little gem in the Catskills. No crowds. For all levels. Easy for beginners to go around while advanced riders/skiers can drop into the advanced terrain and meet at the bottom. If you're willing to put up with the slow chairs, and you don't expect the Vail backbowls, you'll have a blast.
My family and I came here during MLK weekend and it was packed to the point where we had to park on the side of the road which was pretty unsafe especially having to walk up to the mountain with young kids. I really wish they would mention this as I would have been more prepared. They did have a shuttle that takes you to the mountain but it wasn't very frequent so we ended up walking half a mile to the mountain with all our ski gear. My daughter cried the whole way walking up to the mountain. There were private parking for $20 but there were no guarantee on availability. One family paid $20 for the private parking just to find out there were no spots available. This was very stressful especially with young kids. Food was also very expensive ($10 for a cup of clam chowder) but those prices are expected ...I guess. The girls that worked at the counter serving the food looked miserable. One girl filled my soup only half way and when I told her to fill it up she gave me an attitude. Aside from all the above, my kids still had a good time skiing but I will not be returning unfortunately.
We visited Plattekill mountain for the first time this past weekend and we LOVED it. Got an all-day ski lesson with Carol and she was the best. She was so patient and walked us through every step and gave tons of great advice. Highly recommend this mountain to anyone who’s looking for a chill ‘old-school’ vibe place to ski. We’ll definitely be back
At first I thought there would be no snow because the lower roads were clear. Nope! I was wrong. It was an awesome place for a beginner child. Small parking lot so less walking and carrying things for parents. People were beyond nice and not in a rush. When my son dropped his skis en route to the learning area and I was 10 feet in front, people stopped to help him. Cool music playing on the deck. Enough terrain for the absolute beginner and people who like a small, friendly location.
